About me

My name is Miraya McCoy Palmer, I have just completed my A-levels and have decided to volunteer abroad to learn more about the world and gain invaluable experience through community service before beginning university studies. I am delighted to have been chosen as a volunteer with the charity Project Trust after a selection course on the Isle of Coll, and will leave England in January to spend eight months working in Nepal! I will be living in a remote rural community in Western Nepal (Baglung District), and teaching English to children aged 5-18.

Leaving home and England to live in Nepal will bring many exciting challenges and amazing experiences – I can’t wait to be immersed in a foreign culture and language. The experience is bound to be challenging, and I will have to overcome a difficult language barrier in order to communicate effectively with the community. I am hugely excited to learn Nepali and become accustomed to a completely different way of life. I am so grateful to have this opportunity to make a small contribution in Nepal, improve my linguistic capacity, and acquire invaluable teaching skills. I hope that this project will further cultivate my interests in learning about other cultures, languages and traditions, and be the first of many such experiences.

As part of this commitment, I need to raise £5,500 to pay for the expenses of my flights and accommodation. I have many ideas that I hope will help me to realise this goal, and would be so grateful for any donations to help me get there. In August I will be completing a sponsored climb of Mount Kinabalu (highest peak in Malaysia) whilst I visit my Grandparents. I am also planning a sponsored bike ride in the autumn, and plan to host a Scottish dance (Ceilidh) in London.

I would deeply appreciate your support – thank you for any contribution that can be made.
